· Passed the General Certificate in Education Advanced Level Examination in 1996 with a “B” Pass for Political Science, And two “C” passes for Economics and Commerce and Finance.

· Passed the first Examination for General Arts Degree Examination at Sri Jayewardenepura University, Sri lanka as an External Candidate.

What do I expect?

· Seek and request for help and support from the selected Government and Non– Governmental organizations, well wishers and other donor communities to help to get a good and sound higher education in a developed country like United States of America..

· Help and support by the ways of physically and financially from well– wishers, donor communities, and Government and Non– Governmental organizations.

· To find a way to co-op up with the escalating financial problems of the family by going to a developed country like United States of America.

I assure you sir/ madam, that I have not furnished any false or in-correct details in here. I have ignored mentioning many facts in here for the reason of this letter being far too long, and if asked I am willing to tell more of it. About me

Let me introduce you about my self in brief as possible. I am from Sri Lanka. Me by name Renganathen Elanthirayan, my friends use to call me Nishan, which I prefer the most as it is easier for me and others to pronounce it. I am 0f 28 years of age and single in status, was born on October 01, 1977. after completing my school academic years I joined the Teacher’s Training College and on completing National Diploma in Teaching –English, course which is of three year duration, I became a Teacher of English Language and presently serving in a Government school which is located near my home town for the past four and half years.

To tell you shortly I have engaged in this teaching field for the past Eight years. Although, I specialized in teaching English as a second language I can teach Social studies, Commerce, Computer Science and Political Science – a subject I like most. With that I have completed my first examination on B.A Degree as an external under graduate student in a Sri Lankan university. I have completed a two years course on Higher Diploma in Software Engineering and recently completed an course on Computer Hardware Assembling and Trouble Shooting.

I am the leading singer in a small musical band which consists of my friends, which we perform in functions and ceremonies.

I have worked in hands with many Non- Governmental Organizations back here in Sri Lanka as a Volunteer. To name some

I still think and feel that I am gifted enough with knowledge and experience to my age, although, not much of been taken out from me to the society. I think I have a lot of offer to the world in return for what I have gained from it. I feel that the society has failed in recognizing me as a person who could help them in their endeavors.

I feel sorry to my self because, some qualifications and talents which I have are getting rotten and are of no use to me or to the society, where I am not given the opportunity to use it in a profitable manner by which I can learn and polish-up my knowledge.

Though I do not posses paper qualifications on some fields I am good at, I am person who searches for knowledge and a person who is willing to learn.

I am an enthusiastic and energetic youth who is inspired by the new developments in the World nowadays and wants to gain the firsthand experience on them .

I am a Nature lover who loves and wants to be the part and parcel of the Mother Nature and likes to explore the hidden wonders of it.

It may be because of the country’s social background and my family’s background. Where close to 74% of the Sri Lankan Society are Buddhist and mainly Sinhalese, and rest too comprises a major part of Hindus and Muslims. A very small percentage of the Sri Lankan Population are the Christians, which is 1% to 2%, and Christian from the plantation sector is of 0.1%-0.2% only from which I come from.

I being a member of this minority religious group and representing a minority ethnic group that is Tamils which is vastly being oppressed in this country, and also hailing from sidelined plantation sector may be the reason that the Sri Lankan Community is not willing to give me the due recognition.

I have experienced and felt in many ways and in many instances. I was neglected or a person who is second to me has earned the grace where I just because of the foresaid reason being sidelined, or ignored.

EDUCATION IN AMERICA

3 Education

Education has been the strength in the development of the individual and the society through out the American history. The importance that was given to the Education still remains to be the same.

Important reason why America emerged out into a reckoning force in the fields of economy, politics, science and culture is because of providing “Equal opportunity to everyone”. In America education is provided on the talents and merits of the student.

I would say that equal opportunity for the talented and skilled has raised the standards of the American education system.

An attitude among the Americans is that they believe that the future of the society depends upon the number of learned in the society and how far they are skilled to perform a given duty. This attitude towards education has certainly paved the way for large amount of money being flown in to the education system despite many financial shortcomings.

There is no rigid national level education system in USA. It is considered that what should be taught in the schools or colleges are decided by the respective states and their people. It is the school’s administrative board decides what should be their curriculum and syllabus considering the level of the students.

Because, of this there is always room for amendments and changes to suit the needs of the society, which gives opportunities for experiments to be carried out.

Different syllabuses are taught under one roof in USA schools. Whereas, there are separate faculties to teach them in other countries.

Irrespective of cast, creed, race, origin of the person or the social status equal opportunities are given in the education field to every individual

It is believed that to become a democratic and well socialized country standard of education should be of higher level.

Equal opportunity in Education has always been the tool in America to unite and to make a perfect American.

Many generations of immigration has infused different cultures, languages, religious beliefs, in to the American society. But, to bring about unity among this diversity education has certainly played a vital role.

Many people who have immigrated and immigrating to America believe that they and their children can get a sound education in USA.

Many immigrants say that it is much easier to climb up the social-status ladder and you can easily build up your financial stability in USA. It is this education system in USA has paved the way for it.

No matter what your ambition is- money, status, authority or knowledge? The road to success starts at the door step of the college.

In here briefly I wish to note some few other points why do I wish to go to America.

· Economically America is a big and strong country, with enough resources and the urge of the Americans to experiment new things explore new ways and the government’s boost to it has helped the course of this enormous economic development. An average worker in America gets paid more than any worker in the world.

· Pioneering developments in the fields of transportation, communication, sports and entertainment makes America is a country worth living and work for it.

· Three main traits that could be seen among the Americans are friendliness towards their neighbors and strangers, live and let live attitude, hospitality toward the guests makes the American culture a well developed one. A friend in need.

In here I tried to answer the question, why do I want to go to America? In here I have portrayed the picture of America; the way I see in contrast to the Sri Lankan society.

By doing it so I expect to be a part of the independent, civilized and cultured community. For which I seek the help of you and your organization.

We the People

2. We the people

America on many occasions described as “Immigrant Country”, I could see there are two reasons for it. First is being America was formed and built by many generations of immigrants and their descendants. Secondly America allows more immigrants in to the country more than any other country in the world.

Although the Americans proudly accept that their origins are different, He is an American , who , leaving behind him all his ancient prejudices and manners receives new ones from the new mode of life he has embraced, the new government he obeys and new rank he holds. It is more than the feeling of Irishmen, Italian, or German, patriotism of being an American overwhelms all other differences among them. It is this unity makes them a great nation.

Further, alien residents in the USA are not compelled to become citizen nor are they penalized for not doing so. A great many non citizens live in the USA and enjoy the same freedom of thought, speech, and action as of a natural born Americans.

America, dose not has an official language. English is used commonly because it is been spoken by the majority of them. Further, the freedom and the right to believe and worship any faith or religion even to start a new one. Makes them a nation accepts and respects other person’s right. And religion plays no part in the governments function.

Where as in Sri Lanka, it is the other way around, where there is a official language Sinhala, although the constitution says Tamil Language is too a official language in reality it is not, and there is a official religion Buddhism, the constitution itself says that it is the governments duty to nourish the growth of this religion. It is the Buddhist religious leaders decide what the function of the government.

Which was the cause of the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, to which me and my family and the community I come from been a victim directly and in directly.

Equal right to women in the society not just in papers and talks in practical reality and too makes them a nation worthy of living. Where as, in Sri Lanka it is only confined to speeches and debates

My American Dream

in here i have tried to explain America in my point of view and why do i want to go to USA under three main topics which i feel important.

1. In search of America

“A stern and desolate country, a high bare country a country brimming with beauty, not to be found elsewhere”

America is vast country, therefore whatever said of it is mostly true, and it is the same the other way around.

When I try to describe about America and Americans, my approach is the same as it is if to another country.

My point of view on America is formed upon from what I heard, seen, read or observed. What a foreigner pictures of America in his mind are based on books, novels, stories, and especially from Hollywood cinema.

While realizing and accepting that geographically America is a big and vast country, I do believe there are dissimilarity and changes in it too. But, if you happed to travel from one corner to another in America opportunity to speak the same language is not unusual to the Americans, which gives you the feeling, that though you are in a totally different cultural and social background I am in my motherland.

America is a country formed upon ambitions, further it has openly stated it so, while constantly monitoring the progress of it aspires to bridge the gap between where we are and where we should be.

The readiness to accept the reality is a good quality that can be seen among the Americans. The declaration of independence July 4, 1776, says “we hold the truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”

While saying “all men are created equal” America, sadly accepts that not all are treated equal in the real society, and always tries to keep this gap to a minimal level.

For me America is a different country and it has to be different. In which I want to be a part of it.

My Family and Religion

My Family and Religion

Let my say a few words on my family and its religious background here. I am the eldest in the family of two; there is a sister younger to me. She has completed a National Diploma in Teaching Eastern Music & Dance still unemployed; she is of 26 years of age. My father who worked as a clerk in a plantation office is now retired and who is sick and bed –ridden. My mother is a Principal in a Government school.

On my family religious background, it’s rather complex or a complicated one. To start with my Grandfather who is a Hindu by birth went on to become a Buddhist Clergy (Monk) in his middle ages and remained so until his death. My Father is a believer of Hindu religion and the only Christian link in our family is by the way of our Mother. She and her family members are Christians by which I happened to learn about Jesus Christ. But to no avail my only religious education is from the school which I studied that too because it is being a Christian school and more of that I have to answer a Religion exam paper to complete my studies which made me to learn Christianity.

As you would understand that being raised up in a complex and complicated religious back drop my only knowledge on Jesus is that I got it from the books, magazines, films, Bible and by word of mouth. Which, I think is a like a grain of sand in a palm.

Our family is not a well-to –do family, it is Middle –class family to the social standards of Sri Lankan society, from the plantation sector, where we are able to cope with the daily plunging economic status and the raising cost-of –living amount of the country. With the sickness of my father who needs an attendant and sister who is unemployed it is a hard battle to co-op with the raising cost of living. Which adversely affect my future?

My American Dream

in here i have tried to explain America in my point of view and why do i want to go to USA under three main topics which i feel important.
